“Bangkok” đã được sử dụng từ tháng 11 năm 2001. Nó đến từ một khu vực cũ của Bangkok, hiện là một phần của khu vực đô thị lớn hơn của thủ đô, các quận Bangkok Noi và Bangkok Yai.
Trong cùng một thông báo, ORST đã liệt kê cách viết chính thức của tiếng Thái cho các thành phố khác, cụ thể là tên tiếng Thái cho Kuala Lumpur, Rome, Nay Pyi Taw, Kathmandu và cách viết tiếng Thái cho Nhà nước Palestine.
