Kế hoạch đánh thuế du lịch 500 baht đối với khách nước ngoài từ năm tới đã gây chia rẽ ý kiến giữa các nhà khai thác du lịch. Một báo cáo của Nikkei Asia cho biết một số nhà khai thác lo ngại rằng động thái như vậy có thể ngăn cản khách du lịch, ngay khi đất nước chuẩn bị mở cửa trở lại. Một trong số đó là Chủ tịch Hiệp hội Khách sạn Thái Lan, Marisa Sukosol Nunbhakdi.
“Mức phí được thực hiện là cao đáng kể đối với những người đến thăm Thái Lan, nơi có thể có các phòng khách sạn chỉ với 1.000 baht. 500 baht sẽ ảnh hưởng đến quyết định của khách truy cập tiềm năng. ”
Kongsak Khoopongsakorn từ chương phía nam của THA đồng ý rằng ngành du lịch cần nguồn vốn, nhưng tin rằng chính phủ, chứ không phải khách du lịch, nên trả tiền.
“Chúng tôi cần quỹ cho một số mục đích để làm cho ngành du lịch của chúng tôi phát triển bền vững. Nhưng tôi không nghĩ rằng quỹ nên được lấy từ khách du lịch. ”
Trong khi đó, cựu Chủ tịch Hội đồng Du lịch Thái Lan, Chairat Trirattanajaraspon, nói rằng bây giờ là lúc để đưa ra một loại thuế như vậy, khi ngành du lịch nổi lên sau sự tàn phá tài chính do Covid-19 gây ra.
“Tôi nghĩ đây là thời điểm tốt để thực hiện thuế, vì đại dịch Covid-19 đã chỉ ra nhu cầu rõ ràng. Quỹ được đề xuất sẽ là một cơ chế rất hữu ích để cho vay hỗ trợ ngành du lịch nếu chúng ta phải đối mặt với một cuộc khủng hoảng khác trong tương lai. ”
Phí đề xuất ban đầu được đặt ở mức 300 baht, trước khi được tăng lên 500 baht vào đầu tháng này. Nó tách biệt với thuế khởi hành đã đánh đối với hành khách khởi hành và sẽ được sử dụng để biến đất nước thành một thị trường cao cấp cho khách du lịch nước ngoài. Nó vẫn yêu cầu sự chấp thuận của Nội các trước khi được thực hiện.
